The Environmental Justice Committee of the 225th General Assembly concluded its business on Saturday after creating a revised version of ENV-09 that embraces selective divestment as “the most effective leverage” for holding companies responsible when it comes to protecting the planet through “active engagement.” 

During its final day of business Saturday, the Health, Safety and Benefits Committee approved most of the recommendations made by the Survivors of Sexual Misconduct Task Force. The recommendations of the task force, moderated by the Rev. Carol Howard Merritt, were contained in HSB-05, which with all the amendments commissioners proposed on Saturday took the committee most of the day to complete. 

The Committee on Race and Gender Justice finished its work on Saturday, approving three resolutions that reflected the committee’s intersecting focuses: disparities experienced by Black women and girls, racism as a public health crisis, and violence and hate against Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders (AA, NH, PI). 

The second round of committee meetings at the 225th General Assembly wrapped up Saturday afternoon with no reports of positive Covid cases during the three-day gathering.

The Committee on Addressing Violence in the U.S.A. concluded its business Saturday after considering two overtures, [VIOL-08] On Living in Healthy Relationships Free of Violence and Coercion and [VIOL-09] On Commending and Recommending the Guns to Garden Movement.  

The Environmental Justice Committee of the 225th General Assembly heard multiple presentations and opinions on Friday about whether and how the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) should divest from fossil fuels, but it wrapped for the night after deciding more time is needed to think things through and devise a strategy for moving forward.

The Race and Gender Justice Committee approved four main motions on its second day of work in the Presbyterian Center, sending to the full Assembly overtures and resolutions apologizing for the sin of slavery, encouraging the installation of more pastors at congregations of color and seeking to repair the lasting breach of racism. 

In a General Assembly marked by firsts, the Rev. Miguel Angel Dros Lorenzo — the first moderator to conduct committee business in a language other than English — knows who and what deserve his enthusiastic “gracias.” 

The Committee on Addressing Violence in the U.S.A. spent its second day of business addressing VIOL-01, VIOL-05 and VIOL-07.  

On the very day the Supreme Court took away a woman’s right to choose in several states, the Health, Safety and Benefits Committee twice voted on items that reaffirm the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)’s stand on choice and reproductive justice. 

Commissioners and advisory delegates who have been able to be in Louisville for the 225th General Assembly have been thrilled to be part of in-person committee meetings for the first-ever hybrid Assembly. 

The Environmental Justice Committee voted Thursday in favor of a proposal that the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) divest from five fossil fuel companies, following the failure of a motion that would have postponed action until a group of other divestment overtures are taken up on Friday.  

On the first day of its work, the Race and Gender Justice Committee took a big step toward addressing an historical injustice against a Native Alaskan congregation in Juneau, Alaska, approving an overture instructing reparation and atonement for the racist closing of Memorial Presbyterian Church in 1963.

The Health, Safety and Benefits Committee approved three items Thursday designed to strengthen and extend mental health ministry throughout the denomination. 

After some early hiccups with voting logistics, the Addressing Violence in the USA Committee kicked off its meeting Thursday morning at the 225th General Assembly. The committee considered three overtures: VIOL-02: A Resolution on Preventing, Reporting, and Responding to Bullying, Harassment, and Assault—From the Advocacy Committee for Women’s Concerns; VIOL-04: On Encouraging Our Churches to Counter Polarization in Our Society; and VIOL-06: Resolution on “Lift Every Voice: Democracy, Voting Rights, and Electoral Reform”—From the Advisory Committee on Social Witness Policy.

After completing two full days of committee business, the Theology, Worship and Education (TWE) Committee faced a lighter — if no less weighty — agenda on its concluding day of Assembly work.

The Mid Councils Committee spent the bulk of its final day of business at the 225th General Assembly reconsidering and ultimately approving an overture it had disapproved by a vote of 17-14 the previous day. 

Commissioners, advisory delegates, and staff of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) are learning this week that Covid has not gone away. Leaders of the 225^th General Assembly learned Wednesday morning that a handful of commissioners and one staff member have tested positive. At this point, only mild symptoms are reported among the group, but they were not able to attend their final committee meetings in person.

It was the look on the faces of young people that the Rev. Jimmie Hawkins remembers best from the march to end cash bail held in St. Louis during the 223rd General Assembly (2018).

When Ruling Elder Elona Street-Stewart and the Rev. Gregory Bentley, Co-Moderators of the 224th General Assembly (2020), first touched down in Louisville on June 24, 2020, to preside at the first-ever fully online General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), little did they know that they’d be returning to the same spot two years later for another historic first.  

Sticking with its first-day precedent, the Polity Committee voted to approve a single item of business, disapproving the others on its agenda. Two disapproved items added comments — one urging partnership with historically Black congregations, the other recommending work by the Mid Councils Committee. 

A spirited dialogue around three separate items calling for the possible addition of a new statement to the Book of Confessions dominated the Tuesday morning agenda of the Committee on Theology, Worship and Education, while a report and recommendations from the General Assembly Special Committee to Study the Reformed Perspective of Christian Education in the 21st Century took up the lion’s share of the afternoon. 

Most of the Mid Councils Committee’s second day at the 225th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) was devoted to employee benefits, including a robust discussion with the Rev. Dr. Frank Spencer, President of the Board of Pensions.

The Rev. Ruth Santana-Grace, newly elected Co-Moderator of the 225^th General Assembly, informed the Office of the General Assembly Tuesday afternoon that she has tested positive for Covid.  Santana-Grace, along with Rev. Shavon Starling-Louis, was elected during the first day of the hybrid General Assembly on Saturday. She notified OGA staff during the second day of committee meetings in Louisville.

The Committee on Mid Councils at the 225th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) spent the majority of its first day considering a trio of overtures that spoke directly to an issue raised at Sunday’s Juneteenth Service.

As if taking their cue from the Sankofa bird — the avian symbol adopted by the Co-Moderators of the 224th GA (2020) that flies forward while reaching back — members of the Theology, Worship and Education (TWE) Committee embarked upon their work with the repair of historic harms and the PC(USA)’s future wholeness and health squarely in mind. 

The Polity Committee is tasked with reviewing proposed changes to the Book of Order. That was understood by the committee’s advisory delegates and commissioners going into Monday’s meeting. 

On Monday the Rules of Discipline Committee turned down a recommendation by the Survivors of Sexual Misconduct Task Force but approved five other items, including one that will allow judicial processes to proceed against a person in ordered ministry who has renounced the jurisdiction of the church. 

Deadlines. We all face them, although not many of us are faced with as many deadlines as Kate Trigger Duffert.

Meeting Sunday, the Bills and Overtures Committee voted 19-0 to refer eight commissioner resolutions to other committees of the 225th General Assembly for their consideration.

There will be many firsts at the 225th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) this year. This is the first hybrid gathering of commissioners and advisory delegates. Another first will involve leaders in two committees. The Rev. Miguel Angel Dros Lorenzo is serving as the first to moderate a committee with Spanish as the primary language, while the Rev. Iris Dalila Santoni Ortiz will serve as the first Spanish-speaking vice moderator.

But Zoom Coordinator? Committee Technology Manager? The monstrous-sounding (but really indispensable) “IT” team? Not so much.

Seeking decolonized worship for General Assembly 225 was a value set forth by the Co-Moderators of the 224th General Assembly, Ruling Elder Elona Street-Stewart and Teaching Elder Gregory Bentley. Bentley shared:

On the eve of the opening of the 225^th General Assembly, the Stated Clerk of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) is optimistic. The Rev. Dr. J. Herbert Nelson, II, believes the technological and structural updates at the Presbyterian Center in Louisville will make this hybrid assembly not only successful, but set the stage for future work.

The pandemic restricted travel for the Co-Moderators of the 224^th General Assembly, the Rev. Gregory Bentley and Ruling Elder Elona Street-Stewart. But it hardly slowed them down.

As the first batch of commissioners and advisory delegates make their way to the Presbyterian Center in Louisville this week, steps are being taken to lower the risk of exposure to the latest Covid variants. From up-to-date vaccinations to high-quality masks and single hotel rooms, the Office of the General Assembly has worked to keep the risk as low as possible.

When it meets June 20-22, the 225^th General Assembly’s Polity Committee has an even dozen items of business to complete, as well as an informational item from the General Assembly Permanent Judicial Commission.

The Ecumenical and Interfaith Engagement Committee will hear a variety of recommendations from how the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) relates to other denominations and faiths in the United States and abroad to formalizing statements against antisemitism and Islamophobia when it meets June 27-29 during the 225^th General Assembly.

The Mid Councils Committee at the 225^th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) will consider 10 items June 20 to 22, many of which address inclusion of communities that have been marginalized, while adhering to Presbyterian policy.

The Immigration Committee of the 225th General Assembly will be considering four matters, including establishing a network of immigration lawyers and declaring the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) to be a “Sanctuary and Accompaniment Church.”

Among the baker’s dozen business items slated for the General Assembly Entity Policies and Procedures Committee is whether to approve a second four-year term for the Presbyterian Mission Agency’s president and executive director, the Rev. Dr. Diane Moffett.

The hybrid in-person and online format of the 225^th General Assembly makes it easier than ever for Presbyterians to access committees and plenaries, which will be livestreamed via the GA225 website.

Commissioners and Young Adult Advisory Delegates serving on the Moving Forward/Vision 2020 Committee will have, as the committee’s name implies, two items of business to consider when the committee meets at the Presbyterian Center in Louisville, Kentucky, June 30 through July 2.

At past General Assemblies, items of business about the denomination’s bottom line have been decided on the last day of plenary.

This summer, with money matters having its own Financial Resources Committee (FIN), preliminary budget discussions are being held at the end of the staggered committee meetings, from June 30 to July 2.

The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)’s Environmental Justice Committee will consider several approaches to protecting the planet, including selectively divesting from fossil fuels and reducing the church’s carbon footprint, during the 225th General Assembly later this month.

For the sheer volume of business before it — it has 31 items to consider — the Committee on the Standing Rules of the General Assembly will have to hit the ground running during its in-person work June 27-29 at the Presbyterian Center in Louisville, Kentucky.

One glance at the docket of the Race and Gender Justice Committee (RGJ) reveals the historic sweep and connection of its 10 scheduled items of business.

Beyond identifying past oppression and exploitation by the church of marginalized communities and individuals, the committee’s commissioners and delegates will look for ways to achieve restorative justice going forward.

Call it doing things decently and in order, or a Presbyterian spin on the first and second rules of Fight Club: no single person connected to the Advisory Committee on the Constitution (ACC) will talk about specific advice by the Advisory Committee on the Constitution. At least not before an Assembly.

Items related to health, safe space and benefits — including the Board of Pensions — are the purview of the Health, Safety and Benefits Committee, which meets June 23-26 at the Presbyterian Center in Louisville, Kentucky, as part of the 225^th General Assembly.

From June 20-22, the 225^th General Assembly’s Rules of Discipline Committee will engage and discern its way through seven items of business.

Commissioners and Advisory Delegates serving on the International Engagement Committee will have at least 18 overtures or reports for their consideration when the committee meets later this month at the 225th General Assembly in Louisville. Thursday was a busy final day for the Committee on the Office of the General Assembly during its virtual three-day spring meeting.

Last year at this time, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) was scrambling to pull together a completely virtual General Assembly gathering. They had four months to do it. While a large part of the scheduled business was delayed two years, the Assembly was held, and the church moved on.

The 225th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) is still more than a year away, but plans are well under way for the denomination’s hybrid gathering. The Committee on the Office of the General Assembly (COGA) is knee-deep into working on how to combine in-person committee meetings with online plenaries and how to conduct those at the Church’s Louisville office.

The third round of dialogue between the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and the Episcopal Church continued last week. The two denominations have been conducting bilateral dialogue since 2000 in an effort to deepen ties and work together.
